Honoring Our Veterans
PHS Principal addresses the students at the November 11th Veterans Day assembly with members of the Peotone American Legion Post 392, Peotone Police Chief William Mort, and Fire Chief Steve Malone.
By Avery Lenz, Peotone High School Student Guest Writer
Peotone High School has finally opened its doors to welcome its fellow veterans, and honor them for the first time since 2019. The Veteran’s Day assembly has not taken place school wide since the year of 2019; last year the school had an assembly for its veterans, but it was only open to the seniors.
To start off the day, highschool students followed Mr. Heywood, playing bagpipes through the halls, to the gymnasium. Following that, the National Anthem was performed by the high school band. Once finished, all of the guest veterans were introduced. Guest speakers for this year include keynote speaker, Irv Darnall Commander of Peotone American Legion Post 392, with speeches from Peotone Fire Chief Steve Malone and Peotone Police Chief Bill Mort. Ending the day, principal Spang introduced the high school choir and their performance of Salute to Arms.
Given that this is an important event for the high school and community. Everyone was very happy to have the assembly back in person and open to the whole school as well as the community again. When asked what veterans day meant to him, PHS Principal, Mr.Spang, said, “To me it means recognizing and honoring the service and sacrifice everyone who has served or is serving in the US military or as a first responder, and say thank you from the bottom of my heart.” The assembly proved to do just that, with a gym filled with students, once again, this year
