More Tips for Pet Parents vs. Cicadas

Spread the love

The cicadas are coming, and here are some tips from Heidi Parrish, DVM, veterinarian with Mars Pet Nutrition North America, in the event your dog or cat were to eat or pick up a cicada.

Cicadas do not bite or sting and, thankfully, are not toxic to dogs and cats. However, there is some cautionary information to consider if a pet were to ingest them.

  • Cicadas’ exoskeletons are made of chitin. If a pet were to ingest a cicada, the pet may experience mild to severe gastrointestinal irritation, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. This is because the exoskeleton is not easily digested and can be irritating to the gastrointestinal tract. The severity typically depends on the amount consumed and the size/breed of the animal.
  • Additionally, since the exoskeleton is not easily digested, there also is a potential for intestinal obstruction if a very large volume were ingested.
  • Finally and less common, chitin could cause allergic reactions, in addition to the potential for choking, and exposure to pesticides if the insect was exposed.

If your pet eats a cicada, monitor them for any changes, especially signs of gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting, diarrhea, appetite changes, or lethargy. Occasionally a pet will ingest a cicada and immediately vomit with no further concern; however, if any abnormal signs persist and are not deemed temporary, it is best to reach out to your veterinarian to discuss the next steps or potential evaluation.

If you are observing signs of choking in your pet, it is best to seek veterinary care immediately.
