L.E.A.D. in Monee will celebrate law enforcement again on Saturday, May 18, with a parade, food, raffles, and more.
Law Enforcement Appreciation Day is organized and hosted by Monee residents Tracey and John Henson, with support from a handful of volunteers. Although it is tagged L.E.A.D. in Monee, the event is open to the public and honors all who serve in law enforcement, John Henson said.
This is an event for all law enforcement from any cities, towns, or villages, not just Monee,” he emphasized. Likewise, it is an event for any and all who support law enforcement. Please, anyone who would like to come and participate, show up and have a good time.
“We will be having a Blue Line Parade, lining up at the Monee Village Hall at 10 a.m. Anyone who would like to decorate their vehicles or just be a part are welcome to be a part of the parade. The more the merrier – cars, trucks, bikes, and golf carts – come on down. The parade will commence at 10:40 a.m.”
During the event this year at the Monee Emergency Management Agency building, 25530 Cleveland Avenue, Monee, officer Steve Crescenti will show what physical fitness is all about, doing 137 handstand push-ups in honor of the 137 law enforcement individuals who were lost in 2023.
“Officer Crescenti has done a physical feat every year and has been just as much a part of L.E.A.D. as anyone has and, for that, he is appreciated.,” Henson continued. “Any proceeds we receive will be going to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which goes to help downed officers’ families in their times of need, also started on Day One by Officer Crescenti.”
“With the park (renovation) plan in full effect, we decided to once again relocate L.E.A.D. If you remember last year, the pavilion was being rebuilt, so we had it at the Monee Reservoir. This year, the Monee E.M.A. graciously has offered their building and spaces to host the event out of their gratitude and respect for our folks who wear the badge. Just another way Monee E.M.A. helps out when occasions arise and, for that, Tracey and I are truly grateful,” he noted.
Henson said he and his wife appreciate their volunteers from Monee and the surrounding area for their support for the event.
“It warms our heart when asked if people offer to take time out of their busy lives to help in even the smallest of ways,” he said.
“I feel it’s just as important now, as it was four years ago when Tracey and I created this event, to support all our first responders, of which we feel the law enforcement community faces the brunt of the criticism, controversy, and even down right hatred in today’s world,” he added.
“When we started L.E.A.D in 2021, I believe police morale was at an all-time low in this country due to the whole COVID situation, protesting, and the ‘defund the police movements,’ among other factors.
“Tracey and I did then, as we do now, believe law enforcement needed to know there are people who do appreciate and thank them for doing their job of serving, protecting, and meeting that calling to a sometimes thankless position in our communities.”
L.E.A.D. in Monee 2024 will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
Stepping off at 10:30 a.m., the parade route will left turn out of the village hall parking lot at 5130 W. Court Street, right  turn onto Will-Center Road, right on Main Street, right on Egyptian Trail, left on Monee-Manhattan Road, and left on Cleveland and into EMA.
