Crete Township to Address Community Center at Annual Town Meeting April 11

Spread the love

The Crete Township Annual Town Meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, at the New Star Building, 25930 S. Cottage Grove Avenue in Crete.

New Star Building

During a Special Town Meeting on June 29, 2021, Crete Township electors voted in favor of authorizing the Township Board to purchase and improve the Crete Center property, at 722 W. Exchange Street, in the Village of Crete, for the purpose of utilizing the property as the location of the new Crete Township Community Center and Campus. The Township subsequently entered into a contract to purchase the property for $550,000, which included a 5,300-square-foot building, two parking lots, and approximately four acres of land.

Crete Center Building

Crete Township was scheduled to close on the purchase of the property in January 2022. However, the closing has been delayed since that time due to an ongoing dispute over property rights between the owner of the Crete Center property and an adjacent property owner, which is still pending.

Due to this continuing dispute, the Crete Township Board determined it prudent to consider alternative sites. One alternative is the New Star property, at 25930 S. Cottage Grove Avenue in unincorporated Crete (just west of I-394). The New Star property includes a 32,000-square-foot building on approximately 14 acres of land. The current owner, New Star is a 501(c)3, not-for-profit community organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The status of the Crete Center property and consideration of the New Star Property will be on the agenda for the upcoming Annual Town Meeting, on Tuesday, April 11, at 7 p.m., at the New Star building, 25930 S. Cottage Grove Avenue in Crete. Doors open at 6 p.m. This will be an important meeting for the future of Crete Township, and all Township residents are encouraged to attend and participate
