Crete Police Locate Missing Woman

Spread the love

By Karen Haave
Flock camera license plate readers do more than help catch criminals, according to Crete Police Chief Scott Pieritz.  Sometimes they help locate missing or endangered persons, too.
“I try and update the village board when I hear a great example of why the Flock Camera system in our town is a great tool,” Pieritz told the village board during its May 13 meeting. “We often have stolen vehicles and wanted persons who we catch and arrest utilizing this system. In March, we arrested a subject wanted on a domestic battery warrant, out of Park Forest, after Flock alerted us to him driving through town.
“However, the true importance of this system is the lifesaving ability these cameras have. Last week, we received an alert on a vehicle reported missing/endangered. It was for an elderly woman who had Alzheimer’s and diabetes. She had been missing out of Downers Grove for more than 24 hours, and the family feared her medical conditions would become life threatening.
“Our Flock cameras picked her up and officers responded to the area. After an extensive search, our officers located her in unincorporated Crete. She was extremely disoriented, hadn’t drank any water all day, and was suffering from other medical issues. The fire department rushed her to the emergency room. She is in good health and has been reunited with family.”
Also during his report on May 13, Pieritz told the board Officer Ricardo Rodriguez attended and represented Crete PD at the Will County Officer Memorial Event in Joliet on May 9. The event was part of National Police Week. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week, in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week.
Pieritz also issued a reminder from Crete-Monee School Resource Officer Al Tayler that “It is Torch Run season again. I would like to inform you of the upcoming events and encourage you to volunteer or help in any way you can.”  Special Olympics Spring Games, Region E, were held earlier this month at Thornwood High School in South Holland.
“June 5 is Crete’s leg of the Torch Run,” he said. “Our route is from Chicago and Richton Roads to Smokey Joe’s.  The run is about 1.75 miles. Please notify me if you want to participate in this event. June 7-9 is the Special Olympic Summer Games in Bloomington/Illinois State University. Please contact me if you wish to participate/volunteer at this event. June 15 is the “Five-O” racing event. I could use help raising funds for this event. For anyone who wants to help me with this event, I will purchase you a Pit Pass entry ticket for race day.  Please contact me for any information. Information and donations for the “Five-O” event can be found at https://support.soill.org/fundraiser/5250224.”
In his Monthly Department Stats (April), Pieritz noted that, overall, calls for service were down. Traffic accidents, fire department assists, suspicious persons/vehicles, and domestic calls were all up.
Concluding his report, Pieritz said he attended a Safety Conference put on by the Crete-Monee High School Administration on May 3. “The conference brought deans and administration from other schools together to share ideas and further collaborate efforts to provide safe and secure schools. This included a several layer approach, including social services and comfort dogs for students. The conference covered the following topics: Overview of safety protocols – Explore best practices for lockdown procedures for every school level, designing proactive threat assessment teams, comprehensive procedures, and more. Actionable solutions for various threatsGain insight into communicating quickly with all stakeholders during events, tips and lessons learned, and follow up. Collaboration and knowledge sharingParticipate in group discussions that exchange ideas from across other counties regarding their experiences and solutions.
