WIll Township Preps for Annual Town Meeting

The annual town meeting is approaching on April 12, and the budget will be presented at the May 3 meeting. Will Township Supervisor Brian Cann said, “Judy Ogalla said we should be very proud of our record as far as increasing levies. We haven’t increased levies for three years. We’re living within our means. Of course, we may not have as many issues perhaps as the other townships do, but we still do have to deal with money, and we lost 4,500 acres to the state. So, we’re dealing with that and providing the services townships are supposed to provide to the constituents and the community.” Cann said the budgets will stay about the same.
Township Clerk Robert Ogalla asked about the drainage issues on Eagle Lake Road. He asked if flooding could be attributed to the state of disrepair of state properties. Ogalla said, “They (the State of Illinois) purchase these properties, and they do nothing to maintain them. They tear down the buildings and do little to nothing with them.”
Township Road Commissioner Bruce Hamann said the flooding could be due to a tile issue on state property and could also be a man made problem due to the brush being cut back, which could’ve fallen into the culvert and blocked it. Hamann said last summer, when it was dry, the water was bubbling out on state owned property, and there had to be a broken tile there.
Cann also spoke on the Route 50 project in which the state completed a study of speed limits on Route 50. Speed limits through Monee, Manteno, Beecher, Crete, and Manhattan are 35 miles per hour and Peotone is 40. The state completed the study and said no to lowering the speed limit, since their study concluded the average speed through Peotone is 41 miles per hour.
Cann said, “Average of 41; which means there are a lot of people going faster than there should be.” Township Board Member Warren Asbrand said Peotone Police have been patrolling there more. Cann said he really thought the speed should be lowered for children and residents to get across the highway. Cann said he’s not pursuing any further action at this time, and he wished everyone a Happy Easter.
