Monee’s century-old Furst house is officially an historic structure. “As the previous county board representative for the Village of Monee, it’s very exciting to have a resident seeking historical status for their property,” Christina Holston, Monee Historical Society President,  said after the meeting.
“Having been friends with the owner of the Furst House, Janet Blue, I’ve seen it from when Janet first purchased the property and know her desires to fully restore this unique home in Monee. I know she fell in love with the property years before she was able to make it her own.
“It’s exciting for the Village of Monee to have this property listed as an historic home and as the Chair of the Will County Board, I’d like to say “Congratulations” to Janet for achieving her dreams.”
Holston clarified the spelling of the name of the original family who owned the property.
“The original German family name was Fuerst, but it was anglicized and shortened by the family to just Furst in the early part of the 20th Century, so this is what we are going by,” she said.
“Although the Monee Historical Society, in conjunction with the Will County Historic Preservation Commission, has been successful in documenting the history and significance of two other sites in Monee, (The Monee Creamery and St Paul’s Cemetery), this will be the first private family dwelling in Monee Township to become a Will County Landmark. The county board’s approval of the landmark status will be the culmination of many hours of research during the past three years.
“There will be an official plaque awarded to Ms. Blue, and a dedication ceremony is planned for later this spring.
“We are pleased and proud the homeowner, historical society, and county commission have all worked together to bring about this important designation. By preserving our past and sharing the stories of those Monee residents who came before us, we continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship and give us all a sense of pride in our community.”
Janet Blue, meanwhile, is thrilled with the honor and said, “I am very happy that all of the work and dedication to bring the property to where it is now can be reflected in the historic designation,” adding that the wait was not long coming.
“Not at all. After contacting the WC Historic Society/Land Use and completing their paperwork, it was then up to their committee to complete the remaining research on it, maybe six-nine months. I consider myself very fortunate to know Christi Holston was the point person on that from the WC Historic Society; her love for Monee and my property made it very special for me.
“There will be a dedication ceremony,” she continued. “My intention is to invite all those who put a hand to its restoration and open it to the public on that day for all to enjoy.
“The rose garden is a work in progress,” Blue added. “We have almost completed Phase 3-of-4 for the property, “Phase 4 being the Coach House restoration.
“COVID has slowed everything down, but my plan is to open the rose garden in the spring of 2024, permits, finances, and the Lord willing!”
