Monee residents who enjoy walking the village will find their strolls a little safer soon, thanks to a sidewalk improvement program approved by the board of trustees last week.
The issue was initially suggested by Trustee Douglas Horne during the board’s December meeting. He noted at that time he and his wife, Margaret, frequently enjoyed walking in the village, but there are some areas without sidewalks, making it less safe and less pleasant. He asked the board to consider installation of sidewalks in several areas where they are especially needed.
During the January 10 meeting, Village Administrator Ruben Bautista requested board approval of a $77,000 professional services agreement to get the program rolling.
“As presented at the December 13 village board meeting,” Bautista said, “the administration has planned a pedestrian sidewalk improvement program that will strategically target key areas throughout the village. Recognizing the importance of safe and accessible walkways for our residents, children, and elderly, this project is focused on creating a village-wide pedestrian pathway for new sidewalk construction. The first of these improvements will focus on portions of Margaret Street, Mill Street, and Governors Highway.
“Robinson Engineering has submitted a proposal to provide professional engineering services for the 2024 Sidewalk Improvement Project for the following areas:
  • Margaret Street, one side from Eastgate Avenue, 150 feet east of Ruby Street
  • Mill Street, one side from Locust Place to Linden Avenue
  • Governors Highway, west side from Wilson Street to Dollar General.
The Professional Services Agreement includes topographic surveys, engineering design, easement documents, and reimbursable expenses. It was unanimously approved by the village board.
