Join the Library’s January Events
Mark your new calendars for several of the January events featured at Kankakee Public Library, 201 E. Merchant Street. All of these events are free and open to the public.
Tuesday Morning Book Discussion: The library hosts a Tuesday Morning Book Discussion on the second Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. This month’s book discussion on Tuesday, January 11, will be The Ten Thousand Doors of January, by Alix E. Harrow.
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little difference than the artifacts decorating the halls, which are carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then, she finds a strange book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.
Bingo! Looking for a place to play fun, free bingo? Then, look no further and come to the library and play for an assortment of prizes at Bingo with the Books on Friday, January 14, from 10 a.m. to noon., in the fourth floor auditorium. Snacks will be available.
Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Fun Day/Open House: Join with others in the community at the library for a warm and engaging celebration of Dr. King’s life on Saturday, January 15. The free public event features food, crafts, a movie, and more. It will be held on the library’s fourth floor.
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the library will be closed on Monday, January 17, with walk-in services resuming on Tuesday, January 18, at 9 a.m.
January Soul Collections Book Discussion: Kankakee Public Library’s monthly Book Discussion Soul Collections will highlight black authors and themes. On Thursday, January 27, at 5:30 p.m., the group will meet to discuss thoughts on Black Boy Joy, by Kwame Mbalia.
From 17 acclaimed black male and non-binary authors come a vibrant collection of stories, comics, and poems about the power of joy and the wonders of black boyhood. This event will be held in the third floor meeting room.
