It’s Nice to be Monee

The Village of Monee appears to have a bank account that might make other towns jealous these days. Village Trustee Chuck Rakis said during the October 11 board meeting that “as of September 30, the general fund has a $7 million surplus.
“The village keeps three months of expenses in its savings account, per internal policy,” he continued. “Currently the village’s savings account has five times that amount, while accumulating interest on those funds. The village also has been able to take advantage of high interest rates through money markets and our other investments.”
Rakis also reported Monee residents, who applied for the annual property tax rebates, can pick up their checks this month. Residents whose last names begin with letters A through P can pick up their checks on Tuesdays throughout the month, and those whose last names begin with Q through Z may pick theirs up on Thursdays.
“All last names are available for pick up on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. throughout October,” he said. “Please remember to bring an ID when picking up your check.”
At the same time, Building Services staff have been busy. Village Trustee John Henson said during his report at the October 11 meeting that last month there were 52 permits issued for various property improvements, 20 occupancy inspections performed, 36 additional contractors registered or renewed with the village, and one new single family residential permit was issued.
Trustee Scott Youdris, meanwhile, reported Monee’s Police Department participated in an active shooter safety drill at both local schools.
“Supervisory staff then debriefed and critiqued with school staff, command staff, and also met with the district school safety officer to review the response plans,” Youdris said, adding, “The Monee Police Department has had a very good relationship with our school staff here in the village.”
