Holiday Fun at Kankakee County Museum

Whether he’s called St. Nicholas, Sinterklass, or Santa Claus, join in the fun on Saturday, December 3, at 3 p.m., at the Kankakee County Museum, 801 S. Eighth Avenue in Kankakee, for a presentation regarding the history of St. Nicholas Day and some cultural traditions attached to it. This presentation and collaboration is brought to you by Maximilian Michels. Visitors are encouraged to come early and also vote for their favorite tree in the 44th annual Gallery of Trees!
“Holiday Traditions,” a family tradition-inspired gallery of trees will be held December 1 – 30, and the museum invites the community to come and enjoy this annual tradition, which is celebrating its 44th anniversary. This year, the museum is filled with more than 30 trees decorated by area non-profit organizations. This popular event regularly attracts more than 3,000 visitors.
The Gallery of Trees begins on Thursday, December 1, at 1 p.m. and is open throughout December, with the exception of December 24, 25, and 31. Hours Monday through Friday are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and 1 – 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. There is a suggested donation of $2 per person. Be a part of this favorite local event. The Kankakee County Historical Society will hosts its Ugly Sweater and Hot Chocolate Party at the museum on Friday, December 16, from 3 – 8 p.m. This year, the schedule of events also will include a book reading by local author and illustrator Beth Swale, at 5 p.m., and a live performance from the River Valley String Ensemble, at 7 p.m. The reading of “The Big Hat Wise Man” will take place inside the Taylor One-Room Schoolhouse. Attendees are invited to view the Gallery of Trees, enjoy a cup of hot cocoa, visit with Santa Claus, and participate in the coloring contest.
