CRETE – Crete-Monee celebrates its IESA sectional championship on Nov. 29. Photo from Crete Monee School District 201-U
By Jeff Vorva
A furious fourth-quarter rally by the Crete-Monee Middle School’s seventh grade girls team fell short.
The Warriors made it to the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 4A quarterfinals but suffered a 29-25 setback to Normal Kingsley on Dec. 2 at Morton Junior High School.
Crete trailed 27-15 after three quarters and mounted a rally, outscoring Normal 10-2 in the final quarter, but it was not enough.
Ka’Miyah Reed and Jada Franklin each had seven points for Crete (17-4) while Madison Myers added six, D’Dia Oliver had three and Jasmine Franklin had two.
Crete defeated Mahomet Seymour, 46-31, in sectional play Nov. 29 at Kankakee Junior High School to get to the state quarterfinals.
In Class 3A, Peotone brought in an unbeaten record but could not get by Monticello in a 20-16 loss in sectional play Nov. 29 at Prairie Central Junior High School. Peotone finishes the season at 24-1.
In eighth-grade action, Beecher was still alive after winning the Regional 2 championship over Lockport Kelvin Grove, on Nov 29.
Beecher (18-5) was slated to face Calumet City Schrum (10-5) on Dec. 6 at McKinley Junior High School in South Holland for a right to go to the state quarterfinals, which is scheduled to take place Dec. 9 at German Hills Middle School. The state championship game is scheduled for Dec. 14.
Worth the wait
The Southland Athletic Conference decided to wait until after the Illinois High School Association state football championships before announcing the all-conference football team.
For Crete-Monee, it was worth the wait as the Warriors had 12 players recognized.
On defense, safety Tylin Brefford, linebacker Taron Hampton, linebacker Sir Albert Cole II, Julian Rosson, defensive tackle J’Juan Henderson, linebacker Terrance Sandidge, defensive tackle Joseph Lewis and defensive end Justing Lawton made the team.
On offense, tackle Johnathan Jones, guard Giovanni Arroyo, center Vincent Vargas and receiver Tayshawn Harper were selected.
The Warriors finished second in the conference to Kankakee.
Milestone for Madi
Peotone’s Madi Schroeder hit a milestone on Nov. 30 when she scored her 1,000th career point in a
51-38 loss to Coal City.
She is the sixth player in program history to hit 1,000 or more points.
