Marian Catholic Holds Second Annual Day of Service

It’s a celebration of community and compassion!

On Wednesday, October 25, Marian Catholic High School, once again, demonstrated its unwavering commitment to community service as it proudly hosted its second annual Day of Service. The event exemplifies the school’s dedication to nurturing compassionate and engaged students.

The Day of Service saw Marian Catholic students engaging in a diverse range of service projects, both on and off campus. On-campus projects included: Preparing meals for the homeless and the Chicago Heights Fire and Police Departments, planting approximately 16 trees with the Morton Arboretum, crafting toys and blankets for furry friends in shelters, creating beautiful bracelets for pediatric cancer patients, building a Day of the Dead Altar (Ofrenda) for Union Street Gallery, sprucing up the courtyards, painting a mural outside the school’s chapel, and crafting heartfelt cards for various veteran and healthcare groups.

Off-campus projects included: Visiting local Catholic grade schools, supporting local organizations dedicated to addressing the needs of individuals and families, such as Respond Now and Habitat for Humanity, cleaning up at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and helping at the NAWS Humane Society.

Linda Hansen, vice president of Ministry and Mission, emphasized the significance of this annual event and stated: “Our yearly Day of Service encourages our students to use their God-given gifts and to step outside of their comfort zone in the service of others. It allows them to practice the Dominican charisms of prayer, study, community, and preaching.

“We pray for those we will be serving at the beginning of our day, students learn about different organizations that help people, they work as a community, and preach from the pulpit of their lives in loving service,” Hansen noted.

The event not only allowed students to provide tangible assistance to various segments of the community but also served as a meaningful platform for them to learn about different organizations and causes that make a positive impact on the lives of others.

As Marian Catholic High School continues to uphold its mission of nurturing service-minded individuals, it is clear the annual Day of Service plays a vital role in shaping the school’s students into caring, compassionate, and community-focused leaders.
