Joliet Man Convicted of Murder, Unlawful Use of Weapon by a Felon

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced that on June 24, a jury convicted Nathaniel R. Hill, Joliet, of first degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, after a week-long trial before Judge Daniel Rippy.

The jury heard evidence that on June 12, 2020, Hill, 43, shot and killed Derrick Williams-Scott, 32, around 12:01 a.m. in the 1100 block of Richards Street, Joliet. The evidence revealed Williams-Scott and Hill were in an argument while seated inside a car. During the argument, Williams-Scott struck Hill in the back of the head and exited the car. Hill then exited the car and shot Williams-Scott multiple times. He then fled the scene in the car both men were in. Police located Hill later that morning and placed him under arrest.

The first degree murder count carries a mandatory minimum of 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, with a maximum sentence of life. The unlawful use of a weapon by felon count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in the Illinois Department of Corrections and is consecutive to the murder conviction. Hill must serve 100 percent of the sentence imposed. Hill is expected to appear in court on September 7, for post-trial motions and sentencing.
