Peotone senior Jenna Hunter has had an exceptional year. She helped the Blue Devils girls basketball team to the Class 2A sectional finals.
Currently, Hunter is the cornerstone of the Blue Devils soccer team and she’d love to close out her year on a strong note. Peotone demolished Morgan Park Academy on May 9.
Peotone freshman Allie Werner, a talented forward, scored three goals to help the Blue Devils rout the Warriors 9-0 in the semifinal round of the Class 1A Chicago Christian Regional in Palos Heights.
With the win, Peotone (10-6-1) played the host Knights in the title game on Tuesday May 16th. The Blue Devils were hoping to advance to the Class 1A Manteno Sectional.
Recently, Hunter inked a letter of intent to continue her basketball and academic career at Wheaton College. Currently, in the Blue Devils win over the Warriors, Hunter recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
“Being an athlete is just part of who I am,” said Hunter. “I just love sports. Coming to the games is fun. I have had the same defense playing with me. Ashley (Renwick) is the best. Abbie (Chenoweth) is very good. Kate (Cuthbertson) always works very hard. Zoie (Balaskas) is very fast.”
The Blue Devils exceptional defense is led by Renwick, Chenoweth, Cuthbertson, and Balaskas.
Peotone coach Caley Michalak knows that Hunter plays an integral role for the Blue Devils.
“Jenna is a senior leader on and off of the court,” she said. “We do need that to be successful. Ashley (Renwick) is quick. She can keep us in our games.”
“Allie (Werner) is crafty,” she said. “She can create chances to score for us. She helps us up top.”
Werner is a soccer standout. She had a great game against Morgan Park Academy.
“We had to come out strong,” she said. “It is the state tournament. I was just looking for some open teammates.”
“This was an easy game,” she said. “Addie (Graffeo) is a great teammate. She knows the game and it’s easy to play with her. Chelsea (Bennett) has really grown up as a player.”
The Blue Devils Hunter was quite pleased with junior Graffeo, a midfielder and freshman Chelsea Bennett, a midfielder. Graffeo and Bennett each had two goals. Graffeo is a star in basketball and soccer.
“Addie is good in every sport that she plays,” she said. “She can dribble the ball through three defenders. Chelsea always gives a full effort.”
The Blue Devils freshman Peyton Bisping, a forward and junior Emma Iozzo, midfielder, each had one goal.
At the close of the first half, Peotone did race away to an 8-0 lead, which led to the lopsided win.
