Illinois Lutheran Begins Volleyball Season, 1-1
Illinois Lutheran began their season on Monday, August 22, with a non-conference home match against Crete-Monee. The Chargers started off slow, while Crete-Monee jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Chargers were behind 8-12, when a side out gave sophomore Anna Oestmann the serve. She served four straight points (1 ace) to put the Chargers up 13-12.
Crete-Monee came back two rotations later with a five-point scoring run to go up 19-16. Senior Zoe Biesterfeld tied the set at 19, but the Chargers couldn’t secure the first set win, dropping it 21-25.
The Chargers found themselves behind again in the second set. Down 4-10, Zoe Biesterfeld stepped to the serving line and served eight straight points (3 aces) to give the Chargers the lead, 12-10. However, a serving run by Crete-Monee put the Chargers in a 16-20 hole, and they were unable to complete a comeback, dropping the second set and the match, 23-25.
On the night, Zoe Biesterfeld had 3 aces, 11 service points, 4 kills and 6 digs, while Kate Latzke had 1 ace, 5 kills and a block assist, Ryleigh Peters added 1 ace and 5 digs, and Anna Oestmann finished with 1 ace, 1 kill, and 8 digs.
The Chargers hosted St. Anne the next day, August 23, in a non-conference match. The team started out strong and jumped to an 18-6 lead and kept the lead to take the first set 25-15. The Chargers struggled in the second set and were behind 9-15, when Bianca Hurst served six straight points, with two aces, to tie the set at 15. The two teams traded points, with the score tied at 23 and then again at 24, when St. Anne was able to secure the final two points, taking the second set 26-24.
The Chargers found themselves down again to start the second set, but Kelsey Bruns stepped to the service line, with the Chargers down 6-9, and served 10 straight points. Four of those were aces, to put the team up 16-9. St. Anne would not give up and fought their way back to within two at 24-22, but a kill by Zoe Biesterfeld ended the set and the match with a Charger win, 25-22.
For the match, Zoe Biesterfeld had 3 aces, 8 kills and 8 digs, Ryleigh Peters added 2 aces and 3 digs, while Kate Latzke had 1 ace, 5 kills, and 2 solo blocks, and Emma Nagle finished with 1 ace, 9 assists, and 2 digs.
The Chargers are now 1-1.
