Village Board Plans for Monee’s 150th Birthday
- Saw Village Clerk Doeshia Codjoe issue the oath of office for new Code Enforcement Officer Jim Paicz.
- Heard Trustee Chuck Rakis note in his finance report that “the general fund is operating at a surplus, however, revenues are trending downward and falling short of expected revenues.” Village expenditures also are down, he said, “compared to the budgeted expense.”
- Heard Trustee Michael Wilson report “a new marketing coordinator position was offered to lifelong resident Rachel Beckman to work closely with Economic Development Director Bill Barnes and village administration to increase our social media and marketing efforts by constructing a greater presence regionally. This will include our future business and residential developments.
- Heard Trustee Scott Youdris report the Monee Police Department was recognized by Special Olympics Illinois for fundraising efforts last year. Youdris said MPD received the Gold Award for raising $25,602.14 for Special Olympics and ranked 29th in state, so Monee’s name will appear on the back of SSI T-shirts. “This is the most money Monee has ever been able to raise for Special Olympics, so job well done,” he said, adding that MPD will participate in the annual Polar Plunge at Lake Manteno on March 4. Donations can be made on the website polarplunge.soill.org to support Monee “plungers.
- Heard Trustee Douglas Horne report Monee Department of Public Works is hiring four seasonal laborers and a part-time clerical worker. Applications may be submitted on the village website.
- Heard Second Place Church Pastor David Short tell of an interfaith Ash Wednesday experience with a truck driver, who needed to move a half ton of frozen poultry that night. Short said the truck driver “was stuck at the truck stop with 1,000 pounds of chicken he couldn’t get rid of.” The police chief called Short, whose church sponsors monthly free food distributions, and he happily found recipients from as far as Wilmington to take it off his hands. “I also got to pray with a new friend. The truck driver is a Jewish man, so it was really good,” he grinned. Short told the story before delivering the invocation at the start of the meeting.
