#6 – The Third Airport at Peotone Still A Long Way Off
Answer: Not at this time.
•Has the state finished acquiring all the necessary land for a Peotone airport?
Answer: No. And there is no timetable for completing those land acquisitions.
•When did that process of acquiring land begin?
Answer: 2001
•What is your best guess for when a Peotone Airport will be operational?
Answer: IDOT continues to evaluate the need for the project and how it will be used.
Casteneda concluded, “We currently are finalizing an agreement to begin studying possible I-57 improvements in eastern Will County to meet 2050 travel demand in an area that has potential for both large industrial and future airport uses. The I-57 project specifically was mentioned in the enabling Rebuild Illinois Capital Program legislation as one the department would be advancing, but we also have been very active in addressing transportation needs throughout Will County, which continues to see tremendous growth.
“In addition to the I-57 study, IDOT is moving forward with the I-80 rebuild, as well as several capacity and access projects up and down the I-55 corridor. We will continue to develop and coordinate with local stakeholders to identify needs within the region,” Casteneda continued.
That said, it is reasonable to conclude completion of the third airport at Peotone is yet many years in the future, and it may never be a passenger airline facility but rather a cargo/industrial user airport upon becoming operational. Time will tell.

The state has all the time in the world – it will just sit there as long as it takes. State employees will work on the airport project their entire career and retire from that one project – like route 53 up north.
What a shame it all is and the tax dollars the township and country are losing from land taxes that they do not get anymore.
There should be a state law that all ventures created by the state, or any taxing government has too able to self-sufficient. Like the state owns Bult Airport for I think for $34,000,000 – They should be paying to the state treasury that back as a loan – the airport should be making enough money to cover all expenses to run an airport and pay land taxes. It is a business to own and run and make money – where the state does know how to do that – they just buy and tax and then retire making more money that when they were working. The government is upside down and the only way to make a change is where the media has to investigate shown that most government run business’s do not make money and need to be called out on it. Thanks Ron
