Services were held last week for Lois A. Mills Smit, 101, of Flourtown, Penn., formerly of Monee. Mrs. Smit died Tuesday, October 30, 2018.
She was born November 14, 1916, in Magnolia and was educated in that area. She graduated from Magnolia High School as Salutatorian of her class. She married Gilbert W. Smit in 1943 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Monee, and they lived in Monee for all 37 years of their marriage. In the years following his death, she spent time in the Philadelphia area with her daughter and her family and returned often to Monee to be with her son and his family. She was an administrative assistant for more than 33 years at Green Garden Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Monee. She enjoyed sewing/tailoring with great skill as well as baking and cooking. She won many blue ribbons at county fairs for baking entries, and one of her recipes was published in the Taste of Home magazine. She was an active participant in church and volunteer activities at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Monee as well as in the Philadelphia area.
Mrs. Smit is survived by a son, Bruce (Tammy) Smit; a daughter, Bonnie Baum McKeever; grandchildren, Taylor (Martha) Baum, Lindsey Smit, Bradley (Sierra) Smit and Andrew (Kailee) Smit; and great-grandchildren, Charlotte Baum and Henry Baum.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, William and Pluma Mills; and a sister, Faye Mills Pfeifer.
The funeral was conducted Wednesday, November 7, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Monee. Burial was in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
