Letter to the Editor: Crime in Our Townships
Dear Community:
Unfortunately, there is increasing crime in our townships. A few years ago, it was mostly illegal dumping and occasional thievery. BUT, in the past few years and, most recently, thieves are becoming more daring and uncaring. Several residents in Will Township have had their sheds, garages, barns, and driveways pilfered but not for things of little value. We are seeing big, expensive tools, vehicles, implements, and trailers being ripped off, sometimes even in broad daylight. These perpetrators have no fear or sorrow in what they are doing. Making your life more difficult relative to loss of property seems to be a joy to these low life scoundrels.
Okay, we have a problem. What can we do to discourage would-be offenders?
We can alarm our buildings, install security lighting and sirens, lock all the doors, hire vigilantes (Nah), stay up all night patrolling the premises, (Hmm), unloose mongrel dogs to roam the perimeter(Nah), hire a Yeti to oversee the property? (Where do you find a Yeti?) Seriously, we can do some of these things, and we can call the Will County Sheriff at 708-672-5700 to report a crime or suspicious activity.
Really though, if you have been victimized and you call the sheriff, they probably won’t get to you any time soon, because it isn’t logistically or fiscally prudent to have squad cars running up and down gravel roads in sparsely populated, unincorporated areas. Officers assigned to rural areas do their utmost best to respond quickly to calls for help. When they do arrive, cooperate and give them the most information you can to complete the crime report, then call your insurance company.
Regrettably, most of us have high deductibles to keep the premiums low, so we probably will have to eat most of the loss ourselves. Sadly, there isn’t much recourse for us. We just have to gnash our teeth, accept the injustice that has fallen upon our home, and be thankful that it wasn’t worse.
And for those of you with firearms…If you catch the bad guys in the act DO NOT fire on these people unless you are in danger and fear for your life. If you wound or kill an unarmed perpetrator, chances are very good that YOU will end up in litigation and possibly jail.
It falls upon our shoulders then to be vigilant, security conscious, and alert. Report suspicious activity. We see vehicles going up and down our roads every day, and you can be certain some of those vans, trucks, ATV’s, and cars are looking at your property wanting to catch a glimpse of something worth stealing.
It also seems very logical to me that the people involved in these burglaries are closer to home than you think. Know who your neighbors are. Keep an eye on local traffic that goes by your house. Know which vehicles belong and which ones do not.
Unfortunately, today, defending your property and possessions is a full time job, day and night, and if you take the law into your own hands, you get into worse trouble. SO, do what you can to ‘securitize’ your property and pray for the day that law, order, and justice will be restored.
Sincerely,
Brian Cann
