Crete Approves Solar Farm

Spread the love

By Karen Haave
Crete officials have approved a request to annex and rezone a parcel of land on Old Monee Road for the purposes of creating a solar farm.  The Ufkes and Ramsey Properties, LLC’s proposed solar farm will be located along the north side of Old Monee Road, west of the railroad tracks and east of the rear yards of homes on Sangamon Street.
Last month, the village’s planning and zoning commission recommended approval of the rezoning of the former Bedford farm site, from R-E (Residential Estate) to AG (Agricultural), clearing the way for the construction of the solar farm.
The P&Z commission also stipulated that the solar farm plans “maintain the existing water course and include a more decorative fence along the residential properties” there.
At the same time, the village board has adopted the recommendations of the P&Z commission to annex and zone property on S. Main Street for use as a self- storage business.
Additionally, the board has annexed and rezoned a separate parcel of land at 25608 S. Dixie Highway from Will County Limited Industrial to Crete zoning class of Highway Service.
Under New Business the board approved a minor subdivision of property located adjacent to the power station off Hartmann Drive, an Intergovernmental Agreement for participation in the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS),  an ordinance setting a fee for lift assists performed by the Fire Department, and a resolution to hold the annual Crete Country Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 2. Illinois Rt. 1 will be closed for that event.
In other business during the November 13 meeting, the board:
  • Heard Trustee Holly Milburn’s favorable comments about how well the Police and Fire Commission is doing in the area of recruitment. Other towns are very interested in how the Village of Crete operates, she said, and their new recruitment list should be finished shortly.
  • Learned that Village President Michael Einhorn is working with Trustee Mark Wiater on the 2023 real estate tax levy, and a hearing will be scheduled prior to an upcoming meeting.
  • Heard Trustee Steve Bruns report on the progress of construction work on Crete Road and Main Street. Crete Road is very close to being ready for final paving, he said.
  • Heard Crete resident  Jamie Healey comment that ABC Channel 7 TV will have coverage of Crete Country Christmas. The segment is expected to air on Sunday,  November 26, at 9:20 a.m.
  • Acknowledged correspondence from the  Crete Chamber of Commerce with their reminder to share the 2023 Crete Country Christmas forms. There are no trolley stops this year as they have been replaced with Community Events. The Parade of Lights will be held on Saturday, December 2, at 6 p.m. Crete Creative has been doing the Gnome for the Holidays scavenger hunt on the Saturday morning of Crete Country Christmas. It is a fun event for families that is well-attended. Crete Creative is seeking prize donations regarding their scavenger hunt.
  • Acknowledged a  “thank you” letter from the Jensen Family for the great service and services provided every day of the year by the Crete Police Department, Crete Fire Department, and the Crete Village Administration Department.
