On January 25, an accident at the at I-57 southbound ramp and Peotone/Wilmington Road occurred at 4:39 p.m.

Peotone Police and Fire were dispatched to a semi vs. passenger car accident. Occupants from the passenger car were all transported to local hospitals, but the driver from the semi-truck was uninjured.

The semi-truck went off the road and through the guard rail on the southwest corner of the intersection. The semi drove down the embankment and was stuck in the field below.

The intersection was closed to all traffic until 2 a.m. on January 26.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Team. The roof of the vehicle had to be cut off in order for the occupants of the vehicle to be extricated. No word on the condition of the occupants of the vehicle.

Discussion on social media revolved around the intersection being dangerous. A truck stop is being built just west of the intersection and while 88th Avenue and the I-57 ramps are being redesigned to accommodate traffic flow, a Will County traffic study deemed a light at the intersection as unnecessary.

Perhaps an update to the traffic study would show a need for a stoplight. Hopefully before other awful accidents.
