Bobcats Punched their ticket to State

By Dennis Bowling

Beecher senior Abby Sippel has done very well in the classroom and on the softball field. Yet, a real rarity occurred for Sippel, who is the best second baseman in this area on May 29.

In the top of the second frame, Sippel did make a rare fielding error. In the bottom of the second inning, the mentally strong Sippel, led off with a single, which did lead to a three-run inning, to help Beecher beat Montini 4-0 to win the title game of the Class 2A Benedictine University Supersectional in Lisle.

In the top of the seventh inning, with one out, it was a fielding assist by Sipple and Bobcats Ava Olson, sealed up the win for the Bobcats. The Beecher players, fan, were in celebration mode. It is the first time in four years that the Beecher has returned to the state tournament. It is also the last time Beecher won a state title.

After taking pictures with the plaque and her family, Sippel was very happy about going to the state tournament.

“This was a high-pressure game,” she said. “My teammates were there to pick me up. I went back into the game. I did have a chip on my shoulder about making the error.”

“It was just a great feeling to get that hit,” she said. “Ava (Olson) really came through for us. She did very well.”

In the bottom of the second inning, Beecher Sippel and Kamryn Koontz each singled. Olson smashed a triple to center field, on the play, Sipple and Koontz each scored for a 2-0 lead. Tayiah Scanlan singled and Olson scored for the third run.

The Bobcats Olson, a up and coming shortstop, was very happy to drive in 2 rbi.

“It was a real sense of relief to be able to score some runs,” she said. “It did take some of the pressure off us. Abby was able to bounce back from making an error. She did help us to score some runs.”

“It is a real relief to have Ava (Lorenzatti), she is just a great pitcher,” she said.

The Bobcat winning pitcher Lorenzatti (12-3) allowed a meager two hits and fanned 14 batters. She did win a pair of state titles at the junior high level. She did take a huge step toward possibly winning her first of many Class 2A state titles.

“I am very excited to be able to go to the state tournament,” she said. “A lot of my hard work has paid off.”

“Ava is just so amazing to play with,” said Sippel. “She just throws strikes. I do feel really confident with her.”

Beecher senior Kylie Cook, a talented third baseman, did have a clutch single, which led to the Bobcats scoring one run. She was very impressed with the play of Sipple.

“Abby always gets the job done,” she said. “She does not get nervous. She was able to stay calm and stay in the game.”

In the bottom of the third frame, Cook singled. Beecher Elena Kvasnicka infield groundout moved Cook to second base. A Koontz single plated Cook for the fourth run.

Beecher (33-4) and winners of ten in a row, was to play Johnston City in the semifinal round of the Class 2A state tournament on June 2 at 3 p.m. at Louisville Slugger field in Peoria.
