Bill Downstate Sets Peotone Airport An Agenda Item Again

House bill 2531, sponsored by Rep. Will Davis, seeks to reword a dead bill from last year and require the state to seek competitive bids from private investors as a cargo airport. The bill quickly passed the Government Administration Committee.

The Peotone Airport has long been a debacle of discussion for more than 30 years. The passage of this bill requires the state to move forward on the project.

Over 240 witness slips in support of the bill were heard in the Committee meeting on March 8th. Only 21 opposed were filed.

The airport was previously pitched as a passenger facility but that was fought hard by Chicago wanting to preserve traffic at O’Hare and Midway.

The airport is proposed as a private-public partnership with developers paying to build out the airport and lease from the state. The state has already spent over $100 million in acquiring land for the airport but it still does not have all the land required to develop it.

The state also pledged over $200 million in funding to build a new I57 interchange and develop roads to the airport.

If the bill passes, it will require the state to gather proposals for development within 6 months of the bill being signed into law.
